( Story Behind the Name )
Shri Aurobindo Ghosh (1872–1950) was a poet, philosopher, and Indian nationalist from Kolkata. Initially active in India’s independence movement, he later turned towards spirituality and human evolution.
Invited by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Aurobindo joined the Baroda state service and later taught at Baroda College, where he eventually became Vice-Principal.
He spent thirteen formative years in Baroda (1893–1906), studying Indian culture, Sanskrit, and several Indian languages while shaping his literary and spiritual philosophies.
His former residence, now known as Sri Aurobindo Niwas, remains an integral part of the Aurobindo Ashram, symbolizing his enduring connection to Baroda.
